Tough loss against a good team

The host Lions outnumbered and outplayed the Zebras on the day, but it was a fun contest. Facing a team with 6 full lines and 2 goalies, we expected, and got, an opponent with a number of experienced players. The Groton girls did some nice things as a team: stepping up to hold both the offensive and defensive blue lines, keeping a third forward high in the offensive zone, coming back hard after turnovers to close down rushes, picking up sticks and clearing rebounds from in front of our goal, and blocking shots defensively. Morayo surprised St. Mark's with her unconventional style, playing from her knees for the entire game. She made some big saves for us, fighting off pucks and frustrating shooters. After only 2 days of practice in the goal, it was quite a performance. Lilly and Gracie generated some chances off the rush. Katie scrapped and battled for pucks all over the ice, but seemed to always find herself double-teamed. Our less-experienced players, too, had moments both good and funny. Robin had a couple blocked shots and some important clears; Emily L. won some puck battles and lost one with stick and a glove flying; Alex was involved in the play in all 3 zones. Though the result wasn't what we had hoped, the progress we're making is noticeable, and we know what the challenge will be for the rematch in the final game of the season.
