A learning experience against a strong opponent

On a day when half of our team played at Cushing, the half at home faced a very strong Fay varsity team. It was clear from the opening whistle that Fay had brought a capable, well-organized group, exploiting gaps in the midfield to switch the ball from one touchline to the other looking to finding openings in our back line. Though we competed hard, we wasted some energy chasing rather than communicating, and Fay went into halftime up 3-0. With a better understanding of how we wanted to play, Groton started the second half well. Walker opened the scoring in the second half, pulling us to within 2 goals. Through disciplined defending and offensive hard work, we earned several free kicks just outside the 18, but we were unable to capitalize on either. Fay earned 2 more goals, including a spectacular flying volley, to complete the scoring. Kellen competed hard in goal today, and the whole group should be proud especially of the adjustments and better play of the second half.
