Down to the Wire!

Exeter came to Groton as the heavy favorites today but this ended up as close as a match can be. Groton surprised their opponents by coming out of the gates with strong, confident singles play that brought four of the six first sets our way. The experienced Exeter players re-grouped, but split sets by Gloria Hui and Amelia Lee, along with outright wins by Marianne Lu and Sobenna Egwuekwe, brought the team score to 6 - 6 at the end of singles. The doubles teams were similarly well matched, so all three went back and forth before Exeter finally closed out the top two, both by scores of 8 - 6. In the last match on court, Isabel Brown and Amelia Lee won a tie-breaker to ensure that the scoreboard would reflect how incredibly close Groton came to pulling off a major upset. Despite coming away with a loss, the Groton players showed a great deal of confidence and determination in today's match.
