First races - Boys 1st Boat wins vs Nobles. Others close

Andy Anderson
On a beautiful Saturday we raced BBN and Noble and Greenough on the Powerhouse course (1350 m) on the Charles River in Cambridge. All Groton boats defeated BBN. We won the first boat race and were close in two others.
Our 4th boat had last-minute lineup changes because of illness and the boys rowed hard, but did not have enough experience to beat a strong Nobles boat. Our third boat rowed a terrific race and was ahead of Nobles until the last five stroked when a small crab dropped us 1.5 seconds back. The second boat rowed hard but were a couple of lengths behind a good Nobles crew. The final race was one of the best high school races I have seen in along time. Our boys rowed beautifully, showing power and rhythm. They, too, caught a crab with only five strokes remaining but were ahead by enogh that it did not change the result. It was a day that matched our expectations.
