Roxbury Latin defeats Groton, 5-2

Over the last six years, heading into today's Roxbury Latin match, the boys varsity tennis team had compiled a breathtaking dual match record of 82-2.  Groton's only losses had been to Roxbury Latin. Groton, in turn, had beaten Roxbury Latin twice. Every other opponent had fallen.

Today, a very strong RL team beat Groton on our home courts by a score of 5-2. The doubles point went RL's way as Michael Lu and Samuel Lu fell at #2 doubles, while Miles Zhang and Husayn Ladha at #3 also lost.  With the doubles point secured, the #1 match (Trip Wight / Griffin Gura) was retired with the score close.  On to singles.

Roxbury Latin simply was too strong today. Though the Groton squad fought valiantly up to the last point of every match, Roxbury Latin prevailed at #1 vs. Trip Wight, #2 vs. Griffin Gura, #5 vs. Husayn Ladha, and #6 vs. Miles  Zhang, all in straight sets.

Groton did get on the scoreboard with beautiful play at # 3: Michael Lu won in straight sets. Meanwhile, at # 4, Samuel Lu, after splitting sets, prevailed in the 10-point tiebreaker.

Commented Coach Conner: "A loss, even against a worthy opponent such as Roxbury Latin, is never easy to take. I am proud, however, of the boys who fought valiantly throughout the afternoon.  Many times, in sports, a loss serves as a great learning experience and, perhaps, a great motivation to bounce back to meet all remaining challenges in a season. We shall see what the future holds with this very talented and dedicated group of athletes."

This coming week, the squad will battle Tabor, Andover, Nobles, all worthy opponents.
