Welcome to the "new year"

And 2024 is off to a good start for the JV girls hockey program. We have fourteen skaters and one novice goalie, and occasionally we are able to borrow a skater from the varsity. The new skaters are picking up the skills and the game quickly, and the experienced ones are providing great leadership and examples of what one might be able to learn. Today's match-up against Winchendon on our home ice was fun for all and more even than the score suggests. Groton had more players, but both teams have girls who can go easily from coast to coast as well as girls who are learning to keep their feet under them and don't fully understand offsides. JV games are often shoot-outs when the goalies are hockey novices. The Winchendon goalie plays soccer, and she handled well the high shots; she wasn't as comfortable going down, so pucks on the ice often got behind her. We don't keep stats, but we had loads of shots. Our emerging JV superstar goalie has learned so much since she first put on pads – in practice, in games, and watching YouTube videos during vacation(!) – and she had some fantastic saves. Next up is rival St. Mark's, at home on Saturday.
