Sports have been a pivotal part of Katie’s life since she was a young child. She grew up playing soccer, basketball, and softball, enjoying all three. Katie went on to play soccer for four years at Hamilton College in the NESCAC, where she scored 15 career goals. She led the team in goals in 2014, led the team in points in 2015, and was named to the NESCAC Fall All-Academic Team in 2016 and 2017. While at Hamilton, she earned a BA in psychology and minored in mathematics and Russian.

Katie started her coaching career in college, when she helped start a community service program, inspired by her own high school basketball coach, to get young girls involved in athletics. Following her college graduation, she taught mathematics, coached girls varsity soccer, and ran the strength-and-conditioning program at the Christchurch School.

Since joining Groton in 2020, Katie has taught in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department and also coached tennis and girls varsity basketball. She completed her master's degree in education at the university of Pennsylvania during the 2022-2023 school year and took over the girls soccer program in the fall of 2023. 

Katie is inspired by the many coaches and athletes she has had the privilege of working with throughout her career. She is a firm believer that coaching and educating begins with relationships and strives to create a positive team culture where each athlete grows in confidence and leadership. 

Julia Rowland grew up playing on the fields and courts of New England. After coaching collegiate lacrosse in Pennsylvania and New York, Coach Rowland is glad to be back on those same fields and courts. She joined Groton as the Head Girl’s Lacrosse Coach for the 2023-2024 school year. 

Coach Rowland attended Hamilton College where she was a member of the varsity lacrosse, basketball, and soccer teams while receiving her BA in public policy and minoring in music. Though her time on the Hamilton campus was cut short due to COVID-19, she was able to move home and begin her coaching career while still in school. 

She began coaching for the Central Lacrosse Club as well as at public school powerhouse, Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School. During her two seasons at Lincoln-Sudbury, Coach Rowland helped guide the program to a DCL Championship and an appearance in the Elite Eight (2021) and Final Four (2022). 

She spent this past year as the defensive coordinator at DI St. Bonaventure University and helped the team reach the Atlantic-10 Championships for the first time in 16 years. 

Her coaching philosophy is "person > player"—she believes forging genuine bonds with student-athletes cultivates an environment where success is produced both on and off the field. 

In addition, Julia will be the assistant Girls’ Basketball as well as the Global Education Assistant.  

Coach Spring led the girls soccer team to the NEPSAC Class B championship in 2014 and reached the semifinals in 2013 and 2015.  In addition, eleven Groton graduates have gone on to play college soccer since his arrival in 2013.

 

Prior to Groton, he spent ten years coaching boys varsity soccer at Blair Academy in New Jersey. He has a “National Diploma” from United Soccer Coaches, and he has also coached at the club level and at summer camps.

 

Mr. Spring joined the Groton faculty in 2013. He holds a BA in American Cultural Studies and Russian History from Bates and an MA in history from George Washington University. At Groton, he has taught U.S. History, World and the West, and a series of electives on twentieth-century Russia. He has also led a Third Form girls’ dormitory and coached JV and thirds basketball. He was awarded the Jonathan Choate Award for Excellence in Teaching and Coaching in 2014.
