Crew - Varsity Girls

Captains for 2021-22: Robin Huntington '22, Aine Ley '22, and Phoebe Lynch '22
Since Groton’s founding in 1884, rowing has been a prominent sport. Girls began to row as soon as the school became coed in the mid-seventies, and the rowing program continues to focus on athletic development while fostering a positive team culture. Like most other small New England schools, Groton rows in fours with a coxswain. We generally carry a team of 40+ rowers with the varsity team consisting of the top four boats (20 rowers).
Groton rowers spend their afternoons down at the Bingham Boathouse, which houses three bays of rowing shells ranging from singles to eights. The crew program also has 21 rowing ergometers for training. We are extremely fortunate that our boathouse is right on campus, next to the Nashua River, a well protected river that has perfect rowing conditions virtually every day.
Groton competes in the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association (NEIRA) along with more than forty other day and boarding schools. Rowing at Groton begins with a preseason practice in mid-March, dual races on weekends in April and May, and ends with the NEIRA Championships on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester.
Crew offers a great chance to learn a sport that you can continue in your college years. There are, or have been, Groton girls rowing or coxing at Princeton, Harvard, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Williams, Boston College, UMass Amherst, Trinity, Bates, and Colby.
