There's No Place Like Away from Home

Ted Goodrich
Groton remained perfect on the road (5-0) with a late afternoon win at Thayer. There’s nothing like traffic on 128 to put fire in the blood, but I wouldn’t say we were exactly ourselves in the first half. Jack Goodrich slipped a ball through to Max strong to put Groton ahead in the 7th minute, which certainly bolstered our spirits. Just eleven minutes later, Thayer banged one in after a scramble in the Groton box, and they seemed the more spirited side. Fortunately, Marc Borghi made a nice run down the wing and crossed the ball into Russell “Back Stick” Thorndike to put Groton up just before the half on a fine header.

With the sun and wind behind us, the field seemed tilted in our favor in the second half. Though Groton added only one more goal (an own goal off a Walker Davey corner), Groton had a flurry of good chances, and if not for some fine saves by Thayer’s goalie (and a tendency to squander excellent chances), Groton would have had a few more.

With several players out due to injury (all of whom should be back on Friday), Groton relied on its deep bench, and new Third Former Jiacheng Kang gave Thayer’s fullbacks fits on the flank all afternoon. All of the boys can contribute, and now almost halfway through the season, it’s time for them to realize their best.
