Tough Thayer Team Topples GJVS, 3-0

The Girls’ JV Soccer team faced an extremely skilled team from Thayer at home on Wednesday afternoon and managed to hang tough through much of the game before ultimately falling 3-0.

Thayer came into the game undefeated after their first six games, with 19 goals scored and only three allowed. To Groton’s credit, we were able to pressure their defense and get some good shots, but their goalie was up to the challenge. Emily Pollis and Alex Canellakis both had some good chances early in the game, and Riya Varkey had a nice opportunity later.

On the defensive end, goalkeeper Anna Pimentel recovered from an early goal to hold Thayer scoreless for the remainder of the first half, with a brilliant kick save in the final minutes to keep the score at 1-0. Lilly Gordon took over for Anna after halftime and had some great saves of her own as she aggressively challenged Thayer’s forwards and forced them into hurrying their shots. Our defensive line worked extremely hard in support of our keepers, but as the game went on Thayer’s constant pressure wore us down a bit and they were able to add two goals before the end of the second half.

Players of the Game were our defenders – the starting line of Isabel Brown, Leah Canellakis, Harriet Winterer and Addison Hyde, along with Maya Luthi, who saw her first action of the season after suffering a concussion in September. These five girls did a great job fending off Thayer’s very talented attackers. Honorable mention goes to goalies Anna Pimentel and Lilly Gordon, whose aggressive play and quick reflexes kept the game close.

Thank you to the family members and fans who watched us, and especially to Mrs. Brown for the Gatorade at halftime and the popsicles afterwards. The team will be back in action with another home game at 2 PM Friday against Middlesex.
