Groton pulls away for 8-3 victory over BB&N

Big days at the plate for seniors Shane Kim and Bennett Smith backed a strong performance from Kim on the mound as Groton topped BB&N 8-3. Smith went 3 for 3 with a double, home run, walk, 4 runs, and 3 RBI, while Kim went 3 for 3 with three doubles, a walk, run, and 2 RBI. The pair kicked off the scoring in the first, as Smith singled in his brother Walker for the game’s first run, then scored on Kim’s double. Groton added two more in the third, as Bennett Smith and Kim led off the inning on walks, then came around on an RBI single by Thomas Dempsey and a sacrifice fly by Robbie Long.

BB&N battled back with a 3 run bottom half of the inning, fighting off some tough pitches from Kim to bloop in four hits. Both teams were scoreless in the fourth, but then Groton started pulling away, plating two in the 5th thanks to doubles by Bennett Smith and Kim and a single by Long. Bennett Smith’s two run homer in the 6th, plating Luke Beckstein after a two out triple, closed out the scoring for the day.

Kim threw 5 strong innings, striking out 6 while walking three. Josh Nam entered after the first two runners reached in the 6th and struck out the side to escape the jam, then pitched a 1-2-3 7th to finish the game. The win moves Groton to 7-5 overall, 6-4 in the ISL.
