Wins in Quarters and Semis, but, alas, not quite in the Finals

It was an exciting weekend to say the least. Groton was a host site for the New England Class "A" Championships and the #2 seed. The tournament started well with a crisp victory against Avon Old Farms, 4-1. It was onto the semi-finals against defending champion Phillips Academy, Andover.  The boys were very sharp, winning the crucial doubles point and then capturing four of the six singles matches for a 5-2 victory. The boys dug deep on every court to play some absolutely brilliant tennis. Onto the finals against Brunswick! Unfortunately, as the match started, the doubles point did not come to Groton. We lost at #2, then came back dramatically to win at #3, and then awaited the results of a tiebreaker at #1. Unfortunately, it went Brunswick's way. In singles, Brunswick proved too strong at # 2 - 4, winning in straight sets to capture the match. Though Groton won at #1, and had leads at #5 and #6, the match was over, 4-1.

Throughout the weekend, the boys were buoyed by enthusiastic crowds, comprised of students, faculty, staff, parents, family members and alumni. The athletic office, including our amazing trainers, as well as the Buildings and Grounds staff worked hard to be sure all was ready for the contest.

Matt Kandel, Andrew Yang, Gabe Scholl, Powers Trigg, Jared Gura, Ben Jones, Aaron Jin, Noah Bay all contributed to an exciting run at this "A" Division championship. Finishing in second place for the second year in a row, while disappointing in some ways, is, nonetheless, an incredible accomplishment for this dedicated group of athletes.
