Nail Biter!

We traveled to Concord to take on a greatly-improved Middlesex team and our hosts lived up to their billing. Singles play went back and forth as veterans Elizabeth Girian and Marianne Lu ran through their opponents but all the other matches were closely contested. In her first match back from injury, Sobenna Egwuekwe won a close first set and then came on strong in the second to ensure that the team score would be at least tied after singles. As it turned out, that's exactly where it was.

Heading into doubles with the team score locked at 6-6, Egwuekwe's presence was again crucial. She and Girian teamed up for an 8-2 win but Groton still needed one more set and the other two doubles matches were as close as can be. Isabel Brown and Amelia Lee earned a three-game lead but then their opponents came storming back. Brown and Lee were able to rise to the occasion, though, and secured the team victory with their 8-6 win. Just a few minutes later, Lu and Gloria Hui put some icing on the cake with a very well-played, hard-earned 9-7 win.

It was great to have such a close, exciting match and to see the Groton players come through for each other when the pressure was on.
