Groton wins on a windy day: Exeter falls by a score of 6-1

John Conner
Although it may have been the windiest day that the Groton boys tennis has ever experienced, today's road-trip to Exeter resulted in a decisive 6-1 victory. The team seemed to take to heart Señor Conner's constant words of advice, remembering they should always welcome any challenge, trial or unexpected condition while on the court. Such situations, he contends, provide opportunities to be resourceful, and to show oneself tougher than an opponent.

The squad got off to a great start in doubles with victories up and down the line-up. Matt Kandel/Powers Trigg, Aaron Jin/Gabe Scholl, Ben Jones/Jared Gura and Noah Bay/Alan Du all won their matches. Good serving and patient execution helped to deliver the doubles point.

In singles, the boys were razor-sharp. Kandel, Scholl, Trigg, Gura and Jones all won beautifully in straight sets. Meanwhile, Aaron Jin came very close, even having one match point in the third set tie-breaker before barely losing. In exhibition play, Noah Bay also narrowly lost in a tie-breaker.

At the end of the afternoon, when the tallies were completed, it was a decisive 6-1 victory for the Groton Zebras. Said Señor Conner, "It kind of seemed to me as though we were in Kansas during a sequence from the Wizard of Oz, with an imminent tornado coming. The wind whipped all around the courts, requiring steely resolve by all Groton players. I was very proud of how the boys embraced the conditions, winning many stylish points."

Tomorrow, the team will enjoy one day of rest before heading to Connecticut this weekend to defend their title at the Kingswood-Oxford tournament.
