Gutsy win against a very strong Rivers squad

The boys traveled to Weston, MA to take on a formidable Rivers team. By the end of the day, three of the matches were decided in a 10-point "third set" tiebreaker. Groton won two of those three. In another match, Groton won a close first set-tie-breaker. The bottom line: The teams were well-matched, yet Groton dug deep when the matches were on the line.

The boys struck first in doubles, when Captain Trip Wight and Sam Lu won at #1, while Max Fan and Charlie Stubbs won at #3. Max and Charlie have turned into one of the most reliable #3 doubles team in the League, notching their third straight clutch victory to help Groton snag the doubles point.

In singles, #3 Charlie Stubbs lost the first set, 3-6,  as he also had done against Belmont Hill, yet stormed back to win the second set, 6-1, and then the third-set tiebreaker, 10-3.  Max Fan followed suit by winning at #6 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, as did Sam Lu at # 2, 7-5, 6-0. These three singles matches clinched a victory for Groton.

Teddy Kelleher increased the margin of victory with his 4-6, 6-4, (10-3) triumph. Thaddaeus Flatz-Ehrfeld split his first two sets, yet dropped the tiebreaker closely, 9-11.  Finally, Captain Trip Wight won 7-6 (10-8), 6-4.  Final match score: Groton 6 - Rivers 1.

Coach Conner commented: "Today Groton notched its third straight victory against strong ISL opponents (St. George's, Belmont Hill, Rivers). I was proud of these boys' resilience today, battling back when Rivers stormed out to leads on many courts in the singles part of the match. By the end of the day, Groton closed the door on this worthy opponent.  I would add I am a huge fan of Rivers Coach Phil Parrish, who masterfully coached his talented group of athletes. He is a gentleman and a great sport."

Two more matches remain this season: Milton and St. Mark's.  The boys now stand at 9-4 in the ISL with three losses to non-ISL teams. They did not receive an invitation to post-season play this year.
