Huge victory against worthy rival

What a day it was!  The boys arrived to the O'Brien courts ready to take on one of their storied rivals, Belmont Hill.  All season, the squad has seemed to get a little better each day. And today? Everything just came together!

Groton earned the doubles point when #2 Miles Zhang / Thaddaeus Flatz-Ehrfeld and #3 Max Fan / Charlie Stubbs each won their matches with brilliant and aggressive play. Groton 1 - Belmont Hill 0.

In singles, the spectators could tell that this match could well come down to the very final match. Groton won the first set decisively on three courts, lost decisively on two courts, but eked out a tie-breaker win on another. From there, the boys took stock, knew what they had to do, and simply delivered.

Captain Trip Wight won again brilliantly, 6-1, 6-3, at #1. And at #2, Sam Lu won 7-6, 7-6 in a thrilling contest where Sam was absolutely razor-sharp.  Belmont Hill prevailed at #3, yet Thaddeus Flatz-Ehrfeld won 7-5, 7-6 at #4. At #5, Charlie Stubbs lost the first set, 3-6, won the second, 7-5, and then prevailed in the tie-breaker, 10-8.  And Teddy Kelleher delivered a "lights out" performance at #6 with a breathtaking 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Groton simply won ALL close matches. That fact was the secret to the team's success in today's match.

Commented Coach Conner: "This victory today ranks up there as one of my favorites ever during my 44 years as coach. EVERYTHING just came together!  Our managers were on their "A" game, the boys carried themselves as champions --- their body language and facial expressions said: "We will win today!"  In addition, they hit the ball brilliantly. I couldn't be more proud of this group."

Three more matches: Rivers, Milton and St. Mark's. I can't wait.
