Thrilling victory at home!

Today was one of those special days of tennis, when the boys' combined efforts were just enough to beat a talented opponent. On a rainy Saturday afternoon, the boys took to the O'Brien Courts and began a battle against St. George's. The day started well as Groton's top doubles team, Trip Wight and Sam Lu, convincingly defeated their opponents, while the #3 team, Charlie Stubbs and Max Fan, once again came through with a stylish win.  Groton had the doubles point. Now on to singles.

Groton began strongly with crisp and sharp play by Captain Trip Wight, who played some of the best tennis of his career in a decisive straight-set victory. Shortly afterwards, Thaddaeus Flatz-Ehrfeld notched a sparkling win at #4, with deep and punishing groundstrokes and confident composure throughout. Groton would now need just one more victory. Yet St. George's would battle back, with wins at #3 against Miles Zhang and #6, Teddy Kelleher. Groton 3 - St. George's 2. Who would deliver the final point?

#2 Sam Lu was ready to answer the call, with his decisive groundstrokes and razor-sharp placement to put Groton in the winner's circle.  Then, only Charlie Stubbs's match remained. He had won the first set in tie-breaker, lost the second, and then dropped the 10-point tiebreaker to decide his match. Yet it was Groton who celebrated the day with a 4-3 victory.

Commented Coach Conner: "I am extremely proud of the boys today. They have worked very hard these past few weeks to improve their doubles play, strengthen their mental toughness, and sharpen their ability to grind out long and punishing points. For me, this match had the flavor of a season-ending tournament, with everything on the line. With the leadership of our Captain, our managers (Manon, Charlotte, and Kayla), and all the boys, Groton prevailed. ¡Olé!"

This match put the squad back at .500 (7-4 in ISL matches and 0-3 in non-League). Remaining matches are Belmont Hill, Rivers, Milton and St. Mark's.
