Singin' in the Rain

Rainfall has been above-average in Massachusetts for each of the last four months. Yes, you may need an umbrella for a tour of Groton these days, but we can assure you that many other features of your visit will make you smile. We have good reason to be "singin' in the rain" at Groton School! To begin with the literal, we added another turf field this fall. Turf fields help our teams play through inclement conditions in the fall and spring. To extend to the metaphorical, today's Groton breaks out with sunshine when compared to the image that many people still hold of independent schools. Exclusivity is anathema for us. Through our GRAIN initiative we have managed to provide all the resources necessary to ensure that Groton includes people from many different socioeconomic backgrounds.

People would not know about our affordability initiatives unless they actually sought the evidence we provide on our website. But most people assume that a Groton education is beyond their reach. It's not! For those who have the means to pay full tuition, Groton has staked out a leadership position in tuition cost containment; we are the least expensive of the country's top schools. In addition, over 40% of our students receive financial aid. We do not consider a family's financial situation when we make admission decisions.

In our department, the biggest challenge we face is dispelling the myth that a Groton education is too expensive. Don't let financial concerns impede your quest for a great school. Prices seem to be going up on everything these days, but our trustees froze tuition for 2023–24. That decision left this dean of admission singing in the rain!

In conversations with my colleagues at other schools, I have learned that we share something in common; people have been delaying their visits to our schools. If you have not already done so, please register for a visit. We are completing a lot of our admission travel in the next week or so, and we are excited to meet with prospective students now. We will run out of interview slots later in the season. The attention people receive while touring and interviewing on campus is a reflection of the personal experience they will have if they join our community. For many reasons it is wise to come and see us now... despite the rain. It has to slow down in October, right? Come and see us!
    All the best,
