Dramatic Victory at Home: Groton 8 Roxbury Latin 7

It was one of those matches for the ages: two very evenly matched teams, vying for first place in the ISL. Roxbury Latin has been the best overall teams in the ISL in recent history, but Groton came into the match confident and ready to battle. In doubles, Groton lost at #1 (Matt Kandel/Aaron Jin), 4-8; at #2, Captain Sam Girian and Andrew Yang teamed up for a 8-5 victory; at #3, Gabe Scholl and Powers Trigg won, 8-4. With this crucial one point lead after doubles, the afternoon singles matches went back and forth. Sam Girian (#2) and Aaron Jin (#4) each lost against strong players in straight sets. Meanwhile, Powers Trigg (#6) won a great match by a score of 6-4, 6-1. Gabe Scholl (#5) took his first set handily 6-1, but was bested in the second, 4-6. At number 1, Matt Kandel played a senior who is considered one of the very best players in the League. He lost the first set 1-6, but battled back in the second, 6-1.  After an afternoon of back and forth, the score stood Groton 7, Roxbury Latin 7.  It would all come down to Andrew Yang's match at #3. He had won the first set, 6-4, and was involved in an exciting second set. He got off to a lead of 5-2, before going to 5-3, and then down 0-30 on his own serve. Yet, Andrew then reeled off four straight points! The Groton boys rushed the courts: Groton 8-Roxbury 7.

Said Coach Conner: "These are the type of matches that the boys and I will remember forever. There was no one hero, yet an entire team who had worked very hard to prepare themselves for what they expected to be a pivotal contest. The team fought hard, and, at the end, it was truly a Hollywood script. The match could have gone either way. Roxbury Latin is a fine team, with great players and coach and, fortunately, we had just enough to win."  As always, our managers, Arabella Peters and Garvel Cassamayor were our secret weapons, at the ready to help the squad. There were many parents and fans at courtside, too, including the girls varsity team awaiting their match against Hotchkiss. Their support made a huge difference.

The team will now catch their breath. But not for long. Next week features Tabor, Andover and Nobles. The boys will continue to work hard to improve. Their goals this season are very high indeed.
