Groton Wins the Kingswood-Oxford Tournament!
John Conner
The boys headed to Connecticut this past weekend, to play in the Kingswood Oxford Invitational Tournament. This yearly tournament features some of the best private schools in the east: Choate, Hotchkiss, Deerfield, Lawrenceville, Kingswood Oxford and Westminster along with local high school, Hall. Groton played some superb tennis.
Competing in four singles and two doubles draws, Groton remarkably ended up with finalists in 5/6 of the berths. Matt Kandel prevailed in the number 1 slot, while Sam Girian and Aaron Jin lost in their respective finals at 2 and 4. Andrew Yang took third place in his draw, while the doubles teams of Girian/Kandel and Gabe Scholl and Powers Trigg each made it to the finals, before losing in close matches. Groton racked up points in all parts of the tournament, finishing ahead of Choate and Lawrenceville, who finished 2nd and 3rd place respectively in the tournament. It was a great weekend for the squad. The boys worked hard as a team to secure this victory. Groton won most every tie-breaker and close set in which they competed. This fact made the difference in the champshionship for Groton. Said Coach Conner: "What a great way to spend a weekend. A roadtrip. Great tennis. Delicious food. Fellowship. Fun. And victory! It doesn't get much better than this."
