Friday is Saturday - a win on turf at Southfield 4-0
Cold, becoming dreary with sprinkles as the afternoon wore on; Friday and Saturday are switched in order to accommodate SATs and games with diminishing daylight. The away practices on turf have helped; today the girls needed no time to adjust to the surface. From the opening whistle, the Groton girls were in control of this game, though some of the Southfield girls, especially on the wings were speedy with good stick work. The first goal came in just two minutes on a penalty corner when Hadley Stack shot and Melissa Cusanello banged the ball home. Thea Johnson scored goal number two just after ten minutes of play. Holly MacNaughton scored her first career goal with about three minutes to play in the first half - a penalty corner, with a shot from Maeve McMahon. Goal number four came about ten minutes into the second half, on another penalty corner. The ball came out to Olivia Bono who fired a beauty which deflected off the flier's stick, went high into the air, and was too tough for the goalie to bat away - goal, right over her head, off her shoulder and, bang, into the boards of the goal. Lillian Harris and Jessie Ewald did fantastic work coming off the bench. The prettiest move of the game was a spin by Jessie which allowed her to steal the ball and fly down the field. Throughout the game, the passing was beautiful - crisp and accurate, using the entire field. The outcome of the game was never in question, and so all played - a coach's relief - and played well. Back to school for the unusual, and not exciting, prospect of a full day of classes tomorrow, a Saturday.
