Athletes of the Week
Congratulations to Groton’s Athletes of the Week for the week of September 24—JV girls soccer goalie Sophie Baker '16, girls cross country runner Maddy Forbess '16, varsity football player Adam Hardej '13, JV football quarterback Jack Tyler '13, and boys cross country runner Fraser Wright '15. Coaches nominate players who have contributed significantly to their teams, on or off the field.
Though new to Groton this year, Sophie already has proven herself formidable on the soccer pitch. "Sophie's tenacity, focus, and fearless goal-tending continue to impress," say Coaches Kristen Leatherbee and Sarah Palomo. "She is paramount to our defense; in our game against Brooks, her countless diving saves and keen instincts were truly incredible. Sophie always gives her best effort, whether it be at practice or a game, and we commend her hard work, great attitude, leadership, and a job well done!"
In girls cross country, Maddy placed third in a race of more than 60 runners, demonstrating that she can "run with the strongest runners in the league, even though this was only her second cross country race ever," according to Coaches Craig Gemmell and Michael O'Donnell.
On the football field, Coaches John Lyons, Jon Lesage, and Jonathan Choate report that Adam stood out with 17 carries, rushing for 105 yards, and received three catches for 40 yards. He scored two touchdowns and one two-point conversion in a Groton win against Brooks.
JV quarterback Jack Tyler is taking charge on the field and motivating his teammates. "With Jack at the helm, the JVs moved the ball effectively—both in the air and on the ground—against Brooks," say Coaches Peter Fry, Jon Choate, and Greg Hefler. "Tyler had some big runs and made some clutch passes throughout the contest, demonstrating real skill and leadership."
Finally, Fraser was the first Groton runner to break the 18-minute barrier for a 5K this year, during a run on St. George's hilly course. His time: 17:54. He finished second overall in the boys varsity cross country race, overtaking four leading runners from St. Paul's in the last mile. "His positive attitude, calm confidence, and exceptional work ethic have been an inspiration to all of us," say Coaches John Capen and Bill Maguire.
Congratulations to Groton's Athletes of the Week!
