Welcome New Students!

They arrived on Groton's Circle from as far away as Singapore, Syria, Afghanistan, and China, and from as nearby as Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut. They brought with them a wide array of skills—from multilingualism and musical talent to athletic excellence and even the ability to pilot a plane.

Groton School is delighted to welcome 110 new students this year—31 Second Formers (eighth graders), 59 Third Formers, 15 Fourth Formers, and five Fifth Formers. Through the School's orientation program, these new students have learned everything from dorm routines to how to use their School laptops. They've toured with their Sixth Form student advisors, had dinner at their faculty advisors' homes, and, on Tuesday, the first day of classes, heard their very first Chapel talk, delivered by Headmaster Rick Commons. Through meetings, fun field trips, and impromptu pick-up games, they’ve already started building friendships that will last long after they graduate on Prize Day.

Groton’s new students prevailed through a competitive admission process, in which 1,167 applicants vied for a spot on the Circle. The 15 percent admitted bring considerable academic talent to the School, but also will enrich the community with their varied cultures and backgrounds. New students have traveled to the Circle from Afghanistan, Bermuda, Canada, China, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Singapore, South Korea, and Syria. They represent the states of Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, and Vermont, as well as the District of Columbia.

The quiet Circle of summer is gone, transformed with the welcome arrival of new and returning students. About half of Groton's 372 students arrived last week for preseason athletics, and the rest moved in on Sunday. A warm welcome to all!
