Powerful Drama Raises Awareness of Iraqi Refugee Crisis

Tuesday evening, students and faculty had the unique opportunity to witness "No Place Called Home," a play that draws dramatic attention to the Iraqi refugee crisis.

The play stars New York actress and playwright Kim Schultz, who plays many characters; she is accompanied by musician and vocalist Amikaeyla Gaston. The pair teamed up in 2009, when they traveled with several other artists to Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. The aim of the trip was to tour each country and gather stories of the many Iraqi refugees they met. There are presently four million displaced Iraqis living in neighboring countries and who have experienced extreme hardship.

Schultz and Gaston got a sense for Middle Eastern culture through their interactions and experiences with the refugees. When they returned, Schultz wrote "No Place Called Home" to spread awareness about the refugee crisis. During their visit to Groton, Schultz and Gaston attended classes and spoke with students and faculty at meals and at the Headmaster's House.—Christina Strater ’12
