JV Girls' Lacrosse vs. BB&N – Game Recap

Despite a tough loss against BB&N, the Groton JV girls’ lacrosse team showed heart, hustle, and an incredible amount of team spirit throughout the game. While the scoreboard didn’t reflect the energy and growth we saw on the field, the team made strides in marking up, stayed positive, and continued to support one another in true Groton fashion.
Game Highlights:
  • Kiely Murphy led the offense with two goals, constantly reminding the team that there’s always room for a comeback. Her enthusiasm and support for teammates, especially her celebration of Apple Zhu’s first goal of the season, lifted everyone’s spirits.
  • Apple Zhu scored her first goal of the season, made smart cuts to get open, and even took her first draw. A huge step forward in her development!
  • Nora Qiao was a standout on defense, applying pressure and creating turnovers, including one that led to a fast transition into the offensive zone.
  • Lily Shapiro dominated the draw circle and hustled coast-to-coast, showing great awareness and speed in transition play.
  • Maggie Whelden communicated well from the defensive end, made smart clears, and helped organize the defense with leadership and energy.
  • Leia Motea and Cecily Green were vocal leaders on the sidelines and on the field, encouraging the team and celebrating small victories, which kept morale high.
  • Ella Bannard, the birthday girl, played fierce defense and was a vocal motivator, keeping the team locked into each quarter as its own mini battle.
  • Dayana Genis, Maddie Cutie, Juwon Lee, and Leia Motea all had strong defensive performances, marking up well and staying locked in on their assignments.
Shoutouts:
  • Charlotte Jones showed grit playing through shin splints and remained an active presence on attack and as a sideline supporter.
  • Bea MacLean and Abby Vanden-Eykel offered valuable leadership, guiding teammates on how to mark up and play smarter, while also contributing on the field.
  • Blair Man and Teni Sobowale made a big impact just by being there and supporting their teammates.
  • Youju Lee and Apple Zhu continued to work hard off the ball, getting open and contributing to our offensive movement.
