A dashing red car and distinguished French teacher to the rescue!
Groton had a match scheduled this afternoon in Weston, Massachusetts against Rivers. Departure time was 3:21 p.m. from the gymnasium. Yet, the Latin AP was also scheduled this afternoon. Starting time of that exam: 12:00 p.m. Ending time? 3:15? 3:30? 3:45? 4:00? Hard to know. And Michael Lu, our #6 singles player and #2 doubles player, was scheduled for both events.
Señor Conner commented: "We were in a bind. We needed Michael. Yet, the Latin examination needed him, too. What to do?" Well, it was an afternoon of miracles. Madame Stanton valiantly stepped forward, saying that she would gladly deliver Michael to Rivers in her sporty red car should the examination run beyond the departure time of the team. And, sure enough, the van pulled away from the gym at 3:21 without Michael. But, not to worry! Madame waited patiently in her car for the team's Latin scholar.
Fast forward about seventy-fives minutes or so, and both vehicles arrived safely in Weston. Madame clearly knew some secret backroads. Michael arrived in time for doubles, and the match was off and running.
Groton began the match by sweeping the doubles: #1 Larry Li/Will Vrattos , #2 Trip Wight/Michael Lu, and #3 Griffin Gura/Jack Lionette. Once singles began, Groton's depth and strong line-up carried the day. Winners included Trip Wight, Griffin Gura, Will Vrattos, Jack Lionette, Michael Lu and Lucas Li. Final score: Groton 6 - Rivers 1.
A McDonald's feast awaited the team in Ayer. The boys promised to go to bed as soon as possible afterwards. Sleep will be key for the coming week. St. George's is next on the schedule at 3:00 p.m tomorrow. Onward. And MERCI, MADAME STANTON!
