Newman to the Rescue!
Nine of our players traveled to Newton this afternoon to take on Fessenden's well-coached JV squad, and it ended in dramatic fashion indeed when the last match (featuring Fourth-Former-Clarinetist-Extraordinaire Alex Newman) ended up deciding the final outcome. Our athletes competing in the 6-9 spots today (Quin Davis, Matt Sennelius, Charles Rogers, and Ven Sampas) faced doughty opponents and came up short in their matches; fortunately, though, the top half of our roster rose to the occasion: Arthur Murray (#1), Henry Foster (#2), and Charlie Stubbs (#3) won their matches in three straight games, with Michael Todd (#4) defeating his solid opponent in four games. And so it was up to our own Alex Newman to carry us to team victory today, which he ended up accomplishing in a tight four-game match in which he exhibited real poise and tenacity. Johnny Cash's inimitable "Ring of Fire" served as our victory song as we pulled out of the Fessenden parking lot. Getting back to Groton before the dining hall closed was another win.
