The season is complete! 15-0 ISL CHAMPIONS
A season for the ages has come to a close. With a resounding victory at home over St. Mark's, Groton finished with a perfect 15-0 record in the ISL and will take home the championship trophy.
The boys played beautiful tennis up and down the ladder today against St. Mark's, winning all sets, both in doubles and singles.
At # 1, Captains Jared Gura and Ben Jones showed once again why they are among the very best doubles players who ever have attended Groton. They controlled the court ably with precision placement and creative shotmaking. On the court next door, Captain Larry Li and Will Vrattos played "lights out" tennis, barely giving away a point in a resounding victory. At #3, Jack Lionette and Bryan Bin also came to play, mesmerizing their St. Mark's opponents with their great spirit and stylish approach to the game.
When singles began, the crowd knew it would be Groton's day. The home team yielded very few points en route to sweeping all sets. Larry Li, Jared Gura, Ben Jones, Trip Wight, Griffin Gura, Jack Lionette, Will Vrattos and Bryan Bin all were winners. They played confidently, with superb sportsmanship and brought honor to the Circle.
Coach Conner smiled broadly as the match ended. He reflected: "I am a very lucky man to have been able to work with such a talented, hard-working, competitive, compassionate and fun group of boys. Their play improved match-to-match, and each new challenge was an opportunity for greatness. They believed in themselves and in each other. I am so thrilled that Groton has another ISL championship under its belt. I am also incredibly grateful to the leadership of the Sixth Formers on this squad. Jared Gura played five years on the varsity. Ben played four. Their contributions to the tennis program are profound. I will add that Larry Li finished undefeated at the #1 singles position in all his ISL matches. He will certainly be recognized for this achievement when the ISL coaches meet this coming week."
During these past five years, Groton boys tennis has achieved the following:
- A dual match record of 60-1. Nine of those victories came against Exeter, Andover and Deerfield. Groton's sole loss was a match against Roxbury Latin in 2019.
- Two ISL championships
- Three Kingswood-Oxford tournament championships
- Two years seeded #1 in New England "A"s; one year seeded #2.
- Three 2nd place finishes in the New England "A" Division Championship tournament.
The boys celebrated the victory with a special dinner at Señor Conner's home. This group will never forget the magic of this past spring season.
