Groton bats break out in victory over Pingree
Groton exploded for 15 runs in its best offensive performance of the season, topping Pingree by a 10 run margin. Groton picked up 15 hits as well as 10 BB, with Sam Harris (3 walks and a hit by pitch), Dylan Vigue (single, double, and 3 BB), and Quinn Clubb (2 singles and 3 walks) all reaching in every plate appearance. Kiefer Wood added three hits, including a double, and Forrest Nelson knocked a pair of triples to the wall.
Groton threatened in the first, behind a leadoff hit from wood and walks by Harris and Vigue, but a pair of strikeouts left the bases loaded. They took advantage of some Pingree miscues to get on the board in the second, with Kiran Sen reaching on an error, advancing on a balk, and scoring on a ground ball single from Clubb that the shortstop threw away. Pingree came back in the top of the third to take the lead against Groton starter Zack Webber, who had worked through the first two innings with little trouble. A single, hit by pitch, and walk loaded the bases with none out, followed by a wild pitch and sacrifice fly plating two runs. Webber gave way to Ben Milner, who allowed another sacrifice fly before getting out of the inning.
Groton wasted no time getting the runs back in the bottom half, as Harris was hit by a pitch, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on Vigue's single; Nelson followed with the first of his triples to tie the game, and a couple batters later Clubb stroked a single to left to give Groton the lead for good. Groton added 5 more in the 4th on an RBI single from Webber, bases loaded walks by Cam Cirone and Clubb, and a 2 run double by Wood, then another 2 in the 5th on RBI singles from Cirone and Kiran Sen. Milner allowed a pair of runs in the 6th, but was able to limit the damage, and Groton put up another 4 in their own half, with Vigue knocking in one on a double, Nelson pushing two more home with his second triple, and Webber grounding a single up the middle to end the game.
Webber and Milner combined to allow 6 hits and only a single walk on the day. Groton has now won three straight and will travel to St. George's to try to make it four.
