1,000 Points!

Basketball powerhouse Calie Messina ’22 scored her 1,000th point on Friday, February 18, during a 57–41 win over Dana Hall. Calie is the sixth basketball player in Groton history to hit 1,000 points and the third female—a feat even more extraordinary considering that the pandemic canceled the 2020–21 season.
The girls basketball tri-captain was twenty-one points short of 1,000 entering the game, her second to last home game of the year. With 5:50 remaining in the third eight-minute quarter, she had 998 points—when she was fouled. Swoosh, Calie tossed two foul shots through the net, and her teammates rushed to celebrate her 1,000-point milestone.
“It’s what I’ve been working toward since eighth grade,” said Calie. “It just feels amazing.”

Calie has been a scoring machine since she started at Groton in Second Form (eighth grade). She racked up 128 points that year, 346 in 2018–19, and 269 in 2019–20. So far this year she has scored 259 points.

"When I first saw Calie play at Groton as an eighth grader, I knew she was special," said Joe Crail, the varsity girls basketball coach. "She already displayed skills that I’d never seen an eighth grader have." Coach Crail vividly remembers a key moment for Calie, when she was in Third Form. “She hit a three-pointer with six seconds left to break a tie in the NEPSAC championship game, as only a freshman, helping us win the first basketball championship in school history,” he said.
Calie stands among a select few thousand-pointers in Groton basketball: Alyna Baharozian '18 and Joe Collins ’18 each scored 1,000 during their Sixth form year, breaking a barrier that had been untouched since 2013, when Marissa Garey '13 totaled 1,070 points. Drew Daigneault '10 racked up 1,088 in 2009–10, and Asenso Ampim '07 scored 1,050 points during the 2006–07 season. Calie will play for Middlebury College next year, alongside Alyna.

Groton School congratulates Calie, Coach Crail, and the entire girls varsity basketball team. Go Zebras!
