Groton School seeks a part-time archivist to manage the school archives, assembling, preserving, and cataloguing a rich and treasured collection; maintaining an archival database; and devising and implementing policies for departments’ archive-worthy record-keeping.
The archivist will maintain the orderly storage of the school’s archival collection to allow for expedient retrieval, using accepted best practices, always mindful of legal guidelines and privacy concerns.
Groton School's archives, now stored in a water- and fireproof, climate-controlled space, includes boxes of manuscripts and correspondence of past headmasters, 100,000-plus photographs, reels of recently digitized film, items of historic significance, and cabinet drawers of ephemera. A 2020 consultant’s report, including a thorough inventory, will provide an overview and substantial information.
Long-term goals will include managing digitization for historical materials of greatest interest to the general public, historians, and student researchers; helping create an accessible online repository for selected items; determining best uses for an extensive collection of already digitized audio-visual materials; and working with the communications and alumni offices on engagement efforts involving the archives.
Requirements for the job include:
A master’s degree in archival studies, library sciences, or a related field, or equivalent experience
Experience in records and archives management
Ability to interact collegially with members of various departments
Integrity and tact
Attention to detail
Ability to work independently
Experience with electronic records and archives management software or willingness to learn
Genuine enthusiasm to work at a school with a rich history
Lifting heavy material may be necessary.
Compensation will be commensurate with experience and hours per week negotiable. However, the archivist will be expected to work in person for a significant portion of the job. The position includes meals in the school's Dining Hall during the academic year as well as access to Athletic Center facilities.
Please note that, prior to hire, the selected candidate will be asked to submit proof of vaccination (including booster) against COVID-19.
