A Quiet Spot for Reflection

Students and faculty gathered on Monday to rededicate the Guthrie Willard Memorial, a beautiful spot behind the Headmaster's House that originally was built to remember its namesake, who died a year after his 1926 graduation from Groton.

The area had been used to varying degrees over the years and needed a facelift. Inspired by the Form of 2013's desire for a quiet, meditative spot on campus, the School renovated the memorial over the summer. "Thanks to the interest of your form in bringing back to life a place on campus that offers both great beauty and peace, work was done over the summer to help this area experience a renacimiento, a renaissance, a rebirth," said Dean of Faculty John Conner, who spoke at Monday's gathering.

The fountain was fixed; the canopy raised on a grand English elm, enhancing westward views; the bench restored; grass planted and landscaping improved; and earth prepared for several shrubs, which Sixth Formers planted during the ceremony.

Math teacher Cathy Lincoln also spoke to the Sixth Formers, thanking them for renewing focus on this quiet place of reflection. "It is a tribute to you that we have this beautiful space to just stop, sit and think a while, or maybe not think at all," she said.
