An Epic Tale Captures Groton's Imagination

Over the weekend, Groton School rode along on Odysseus' epic journey through a whimsical and innovative adaptation of The Odyssey. The play, interpreted from Homer’s epic poem by Mary Zimmerman, honors the original text but adds twists to Odysseus' encounters with gods, nymphs, and mortals as he wanders toward Ithaca. Hermes, for instance, is a bicycle messenger, and Athena seems to channel Xena the Warrior Princess.

Twenty-five young actors joined a team of professional designers and student technicians to stage this ambitious production. The Odyssey was directed by Laurie Sales with guest collaborator Chris Murrah. Sarah Sullivan provided set design and technical direction, Devon Ritchie costume design, and Erik Fox lighting design. The drama department's next production is The Pirates of Penzance, February 17-19.
