Down to the wire

On a beautiful day against a much-improved Middlesex squad, the boys took part in a match that had drama, some very good tennis, and a heartbreaking ending. Groton got on the scoreboard first with wins at #1 and #2 doubles (Trip Wight / Sam Lu, Griffin Gura / Michael Lu). Then the seesaw battle began. Middlesex won at # 5 and #6 singles, taking a one point lead, 2-1. #2 Griffin Gura won his first set, then found himself down, 0-5, in the second. This resourceful captain battled back, however, forcing a tiebreaker, which he won!  Now the match was deadlocked, 2-2. Three matches remained.

Groton had won the first set in each, #1 Trip Wight, #3 Michael Lu, and #4 Samuel Lu. Middlesex, however, stormed back, taking the second set in each contest. 10-point tiebreakers would decide each contest. Trip, unfortunately, lost. Groton 2, Middlesex 3. Sam Lu, however, prevailed in his 10-point tiebreaker. Groton 3- Middlesex 3. Everything would rest on Michael Lu's shoulders.  He found himself down by four points at one point in the tiebreaker, but reeled off consecutive points to take a 9-8 lead!  One more point, and the match was Groton's. Alas, it was not to be. Middlesex took the tiebreaker, 11-9. Final match score: Groton 3-Middlesex 4.

Reflected Coach Conner: "Our team is talented. Our sportsmanship was very good today. Tennis is a game of inches, and, alas, we were once again beaten at the wire. With some teams, adversity can lead to despair and frustration. I can assure you that with this group, they will show even more resolve. The present and future, indeed, are perfect."
