A Warm Groton Welcome for Visiting Parents

Groton School welcomed more than six hundred parents to the Circle for Parents Weekend, October 30–November 1.
Visiting families, many of them new to Groton, reunited with their children; enjoyed receptions, workshops, and the annual Parents Weekend concert; and attended a total of nearly 2,300 parent-faculty conferences.

Parents arrived from all over the world—from Bermuda, Canada,
China, Finland, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, South Africa, South Korea, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.

They also represented twenty-nine of the fifty United States—Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia.

Among the weekend's programming were informative workshops that covered the school’s counseling program, led by Director of Counseling Sheila Fritz-Ellis; Groton’s Global Education program, led by Director of Global Education Nishad Das; and new technology initiatives, led by Chief Technology Officer Elizabeth Preston.

As usual, a highlight was Headmaster Temba Maqubela’s annual Parents Weekend address. Other highlights included a luncheon for international parents; a special dinner for Sixth Formers (seniors), their parents, and faculty; and Saturday afternoon athletic competitions.

Saturday’s scheduled activity concluded with the much anticipated Parents Weekend concert, which featured a wide range of musical talent, from a cappella groups and the jazz band to the chamber choir, orchestra, and Groton’s dance program.

Parents Weekend concludes Sunday with brunch in the Dining Hall, sessions for parents with Groton’s college counselors, and a service in St. John’s Chapel. Groton School thanks the many parents and guardians who traveled from near and far to get a taste of the life, and the education, that their children experience daily.
