Two Groton students’ works have been selected for publication in the upcoming issue of The Marble Collection, a juried magazine that publishes art, photography, poetry, and writing by Massachusetts high school students.
The Marble Collection will feture two photographs (above) by Allie Banks ’16 as well as a poem and a story by Hanna Kim ’17.
One of Allie's photos, taken in March 2014 in Tanzania, shows a local girl at school. The second, taken during a 2014 Global Education trip to Ollantayambo, Peru, depicts the place where Groton students stayed. This is not the first time Allie's photography has been recognized: two other photos from Tanzania won an international photography contest in summer 2014, sponsored by the Camden Image Gallery in London.
Of Hanna's works in The Marble Collection, one is a free-verse poem titled “In Your Own Words.” The poem grapples with the complexities of using words to express thoughts, despite the fact that verbal expression is a natural human instinct.
Her second piece chosen for publication is a short story titled “Mother,” which describes a woman’s journey and transition from youth to motherhood. Hanna says she wrote the piece because she felt strongly that the love of mothers often goes unnoticed and unappreciated.— Anna MacDonald '16
