Turf Field Dedicated, Field Hockey Wins

The Groton School field hockey team played its first game on the Zebras’ new turf field Saturday, September 26. The field, situated between the tennis courts and the thirds soccer field, represents months of hard work and construction. It will be home to the lacrosse teams as well in the spring.
Headmaster Temba Maqubela christened the turf field as the “field of inclusion” before the game—a representation of the school's bright focus on maintaining an inclusive community. The Grotones (an all-female a cappella group on campus) sang the national anthem to open the ceremonies.

The new field is a great boost for Groton field hockey—Groton was previously one of only two teams without a turf field in the Independent School League (ISL). “The game of field hockey is much faster and smoother on turf than on grass," said Anna Thorndike ’16. "In order to compete with our opponents in the ISL, it is incredibly important to have access to a turf field for both practices and games.”

The day was a complete success for the Zebras; Groton defeated the St. George’s Dragons by a score of 5–2. Sammy Johnson ’16 and Alyna Baharozian ’18 scored two goals apiece, and Anna Thorndike added another.

The turf field has already had a great impact on life around the Circle. Here’s to many Groton wins in the future on the “field of inclusion!”—George Klein '16
