Groton beats St. Paul's in OT!

Coach Crail
Groton squared off against class A league opponent St. Paul's, out of Concord NH, to begin their 2018/19 season. Groton scored the first points of the game after Lyndsey Toce '19 nailed a 3-pointer from the corner. Groton maintained a slight lead until St. Paul's scored off of an offensive rebound to take their first lead of the game, 10-9, midway through the first half. St. Paul's stretched that lead to 28-21 to end the half and would not relinquish the lead until the final seconds of the game when Rachel McMenemy '20 rebounded a missed St. Paul's free throw and went coast to coast, weaving around three defenders, and making an impressive fall away layup off the backboard with 3 seconds remaining to force overtime. Overtime saw both teams take leads and with the game tied with 40 seconds remaining McMenemy converted almost the identical shot that forced overtime to give Groton a 2 point lead. Groton played great team defense forcing a tough shot and miss by a St. Paul's player but after getting the rebound a costly turnover gave the ball right back to St. Paul's with 12 seconds remaining. After a St. Paul's timeout Toce anticipated the inbound pass for a huge steal, she was immediately fouled and made 1 of 2 free throws to extend the lead to 3, 61-58. St. Paul's had one more chance to force a second overtime but their 3 point shot at the buzzer fell short and Groton celebrated their first win of the early season.

McMenemy led both teams with 21 points (all in the second half and overtime). Toce had 13 points and a team high 5 steals and Angelika Hillios '19 chipped in with 12 points and a team high 6 rebounds. Calie Messina '22 had 7 points and led the team with 7 assists.
