Senior Celebration

Ted Goodrich
For the third time this season, Groton played a home game elsewhere. The endless rain—biblical, historical, supernatural—sent us to Progin Park in nearby Lancaster where we were fortunate to get our last game in (thank you Athletics Office for anticipating this problem and finding a venue).

Before the match we recognized a significant group of seniors: Rajit Khanna, Nick Steinert, Steven Perchuk, Chewy Bruni, Pat Ryan, and Walker Davey. All of these boys have played on the varsity since they set foot on Groton’s campus, and they have been central to the renaissance of the Groton program.

Fortunately, we didn’t spoil this special day for them and came away with a win. This victory was no easy task, as St. Mark’s bunkered in and looked to clog the final third while looking to counter. Groton had its chances in the first half, with Jack Goodrich hitting the post and Walker Davey nearly getting the goal of the season on a flying scissors kick that hit the crossbar. It wasn’t until the 62nd minute that Chewy Bruni got around his defender and delivered a perfect ball to Max Strong, who broke the deadlock.

The wind whipped, the temperature continued to plummet, and all hoped that some tragic counter wouldn’t materialize. Finally, in the 80th minute, Groton built down the right flank, with a nice series in which Jay Fitzgerald found Bruni, who slipped it to Goodrich, who made a sublime pass to a waiting Mark Reiss—who, bless his soul—buried the shot without a second thought.

Was there happiness? Much happiness. A mighty yawp sounded over Progin Park. Rajit Khanna was a steady presence in net, earning Groton’s third straight shutout.

A special thank you to all of the parents for their support.

We now head to Middlesex on Wednesday for a New England Quarter Final match.
