Loving the Field of Inclusion

Ted Goodrich
Because we seem to have brought the Irish weather back with us and all grass fields have turned into custard, Groton played Lawrence on our (relatively) new turf field—our first game ever there. We couldn’t have asked for a better start, as just 30 seconds into the match, Jack Goodrich got onto the end of a Chewy Bruni ball for a tap in. Groton continued to control play, and Second Former Malcolm Fry scored his first varsity goal off a pass from Nick Steinert in the 18th minute. Just five minutes later, Gili Canca made a well-timed run up field and served Max Strong a wonderful ball, which Max headed in for the three-goal lead before halftime. In the second half LA began to find their game, but Chewy Bruni made a nifty move inside the box and set up Russell Thorndike in the 70th. At the close of the game, Pat Ryan flicked a corner kick on to Liam Stewart, who cleverly flicked the ball past LA’s Brian Underhill, who had made some excellent saves on the day, for his first goal of the season. Rajit Khanna and Jack Pedreschi combined for a second straight shutout and our third of the season. Groton played with nice energy and control—perhaps field hockey would like to permanently switch venues.
