Rough Wednesday Result

Groton didn’t quite find their game today, but Nobles proved why they are yet to lose. The wind was a factor in the first half (or, at least, it would be nice to think so) as Nobles had the better chances, finally converting when Harry Roberts slipped in a Chris Collins corner in the 35th. Nobles high tempo play had Groton on the back foot, and a Roberts’ free kick clanged the crossbar or the score at halftime would have been worse.

With the wind at our backs in the second half, Groton now had the field tilting in our favor. Nobles found their way back into the game, but Chewy Bruni struck a fine ball far post to tie the game in the 74th minute. Then the Hollywood producers got too involved, creating histrionic drama by having the skies darken, a cold rain fall, and the wind increased. Unfortunately, the dramatic ending was Nobles’. Roberts took a quick direct kick that Collins tucked in on the rebound, and Mike Belleni split the defense to score in the 83rd.

A bright spot for Groton remains the fine leadership of our two captains, Walker Davey and Pat Ryan, who continue to be exemplary. Also worth noting was the play of Malcolm Fry, a newcomer to the varsity and only a Second Former. If not for a fine save by Nobles’ goalie, Malcolm would have opened the scoring in the second half.
