Frustration but well fought 3-4 MX

A beautiful day in Groton, remarkable after yesterday’s pouring rain, which made the cork/coconut fill float and turned the turf into a slip and slide. And today we had two teams excited to play and then go off on long weekend! Groton dominated the first part of the game, keeping the ball in the Middlesex end, getting off shots but not quite finishing. Then the tables turned, and Middlesex took charge scoring first about eight minutes into the half and again at about the fourteen minute mark. With about seven and a half minutes to play, Ella Ferrucci found the back of the net, digging during corner play. Unfortunately Middlesex scored a couple of minutes later, and, down 1-3, a glum looking group of Groton girls came together for halftime. With some direction as what to focus on and an appeal to their confidence and ability and for the fun of the game, the girls returned to the field determined to fight. And fight they did. With fourteen minutes to play, Christina Oelhafen dodged the goalie and, with a reverse stick shot, sent the ball home. Two minutes later, Hannah Wise was in exactly the right position at the post to tip in a Freddie Tobeason corner shot. Back even, and impressively so - fierce determination and a never-say-die approach. Middlesex was not finished, though; with eight and a half minutes to go, they scored again, and in spite of hard work, Groton was unable to take the lead. Off to long weekend for some needed rest and then we will be back at it next week.
