Great start to the Season

The Groton Zebra gridders had an impressive start to the 2018 season, posting a solid 35-6 victory over the St. George’s Dragons Saturday in Newport, RI.

The victory keeps the Clark-Congleton Bowl in Groton for another year, the Zeebs holding it from the 34-0 triumph in 2017.
Vth Form running back Caleb Coleman (Wellesley, MA) started the game off with a bang, taking the opening kickoff 98 yards to the house, for a quick Zebra lead. Coleman (10-64 yards rushing and 154 yards total offense) added TD runs of 6 and 40 yards on the day as well as a key first period interception on defense.

VIth Formers Chris Sznip of Denver, CO (8-83 and 56-yard TD gallop) and Brent Gorton (Pensacola, FL) who had a team leading seven tackles, were two other top performers on the day, while Vth Form wide receiver/defense back and kicker Matt Kandel was instrumental in the kicking game with several booming kickoffs into the end zone while going a perfect 5-5 in extra points attempts.

The Zebras will look to make it two in a row Saturday, visiting Brooks School.
