New turf in Newport - a 2-0 W at SG

Beautiful day in Newport on new turf, with all Groton teams but X-C on adjacent or nearby fields. A good game from start to finish. A new turf field is a little sticky and slow, so it took some time to adjust to the pace, and the Dragons are very excited to be on their field. The girls worked hard together, shook off the mistakes and frustration, and showed real determination through the game. Eleanor Dunn was dominant on her side of the field on defense, stopping every ball, containing every girl, and clearing every ball whether to the side or to a teammate. Sarah Conner had a ball magnet in her stick, and time after time was able to break up an opponent with a jab or a poke. Anna Copeland was steady in goal with fifteen saves. The scoring came at about six minutes into the second half when Freddie Tobeason fired off a shot that went high in the air off a St. George’s player; rookie Lily Kempczinski was in exactly the right spot to redirect the ball, earning her first varsity goal. The second goal came on a beautiful corner; Cassidy Thibodeau earned the score with assists from Freddie and Christina Oelhafen.
