Second Formers Lead Groton to Victory at Brooks, 5-0

The Girls’ 3rds soccer team traveled up I-495 to Brooks School on Friday afternoon, getting stuck in a major traffic jam along the way and not arriving on the field until seven minutes after the game was supposed to start. But despite the lack of warm-up time, the team looked sharp and came home with a 5-0 win.

Calen Cagney got us on the board 8 minutes into the first half when she converted a penalty kick after a handball in the box. Groton continued moving the ball well and getting some shots off, but we were unable to build on that slim 1-0 lead. At halftime we discussed the need to play at a faster pace, and the girls responded with three goals in the first ten minutes, all by second formers. Riya Varkey and Calen Cagney intercepted consecutive goal kicks and dribbled in to score, and Riya added another goal shortly afterwards. Late in the half, midfielder Tai Campbell picked up a ball around the center circle, carried it through open space, then won a one-on-one battle with a defender before beating the keeper for our final goal of the game.

Players of the Game were Tai Campbell and Alesandra Powell. Tai’s goal was the result of pure effort, a microcosm of the work ethic she displays every time she’s in a game. And Alesandra moved from midfield to center defense today due to some absences and injuries, and she teamed up with the rest of the defense to turn away numerous Brooks scoring threats.

Thank you to the parents who came out to watch us, and especially to Mr. and Mr. Powell for providing Gatorade at halftime and cookies after the game.
