GJVS Drops Home Opener to Andover, 5-0

The Girls’ JV Soccer team opened their 2018 season at home against a very strong Andover squad on Wednesday and wound up falling 5-0.

Andover scored in the opening 90 seconds and then twice more in the next four minutes, putting Groton into a deep hole early. To their credit, the Groton girls battled back and the play was fairly even for the rest of the first half. Groton got off to a good start in the second half as well but conceded two more goals late in the game.

Although the final score was discouraging, we can take heart in some nifty combination plays and teamwork that generated several scoring chances, especially in the second half. Maya Varkey, Calen Cagney and Emily Pollis were especially effective up front, with good midfield support from Lidia Spada and Alesandra Powell.

Players of the Game were Emma Beard and Isabel Brown, who played the entire game and anchored our defense, thwarting a number of Andover threats.

Thank you to the parents and friends who came out and supported us this afternoon. The team will be back in action Saturday afternoon at St. George’s.
