Student Musicians Play Symphony Hall

On March 3, 2018, violist Gloria Hui ’19 and violinist Derek Chang ’20 performed on the stage of Boston’s Symphony Hall, one of the world’s great musical venues.

Gloria and Derek, along with Claire Lee ’20, secured seats in the highly select Massachusetts All-State Festival Symphony Orchestra by earning high scores during January auditions.

They, along with cellist Nathan Zhang ’21 and flutist Katie Chung ’19, had earned spots through earlier auditions in the Central Districts Festival, earning the privilege not only to perform at Worcester’s Mechanics Hall with the Central Districts Symphony Orchestra but also to audition for the Massachusetts All-State Festival. Gloria won the honor of serving as principal violist for the Central Districts orchestra by earning the highest score of the violists who auditioned.

Gloria and Derek will live and rehearse in Boston later this week, in preparation for their performance at Symphony Hall. Bravi tutti!—Mary Ann Lanier, Performing Arts Head, Director of Instrumental Music
