AOW and TOW1/23/16

Congratulations to Ward Betts (BVH) and Liza Greenhill (GVSquash) on being the Athletes Of the Week, and to Boys’ Varsity Squash on being the Team Of the Week.

Special shout-out to Girls’ JV Hockey (who defeated Brooks with a go-ahead goal with 1 second left in the game), and to Girls’ JV Basketball (who have won their last 3 straight games and have scored over 30 pts. in each).

“Just over a week ago, BV Squash had a record of 0 - 4. In their two latest losses, they were competitive with, but ultimately lost to, two extremely strong squads. The Groton players kept their faith in their own strength, worked even harder in practice and turned the corner in the past week. A confident 7-0 win over Andover broke the losing streak and was then followed by an incredibly gritty 5-2 win over St. Paul’s, in which four of the matches were decided by the narrowest margin possible, just two points in their final games. Those matches could have gone either way, but the maturity and confidence of the Groton players carried the day. Belmont Hill is perennially one of the top few teams in New England, but this Groton team represented themselves well in Saturday’s match, displaying the momentum that will be sure to carry them far this season.”—Coach Prockop

“On Saturday the BVH team beat rival Middlesex and came away with a 2-1 win. Sixth former Ward Betts scored both goals to secure the victory for the Zebras. Ward made great decisions in all areas of the game and his positive play came at a crucial time for our team. Ward also assisted on an important goal we scored on Wednesday against Proctor Academy. Congratulations to Ward Betts for his AOW recognition.”—Coach Riley

“Liza Greenhill played a huge part in Groton's 5-2 win over St. Paul's school. She worked extremely hard to overcome a tough and emotional opponent to win in five games. Liza patiently moved her opponent to different corners of the court, and won points by wearing her opponent down, and making fewer mistakes. It was wonderful to see her maintain her composure throughout the difficult match and exhibit sportsmanship that was absent in her opponent. Great effort!”—Coach Das
