Athletes of the Week 10/10/15

Congratulations to the Girls Cross Country Team on being the Team Of the Week and to Will Norton (BXC) and Margaret Murphy (GJVS) on being Athletes of the Week!
“The Groton Girls’ Cross Country team beat perennial powerhouse and two-time defending ISL Champion St. Paul’s in both the varsity and JV races on Saturday. The varsity took 2,3,4,5 and 7 to seal a 21-34 win. The JV took 1 through 5 to earn a shut-out, 15-45. This week the coaches challenged the girls to take full advantage of the chance to race at home — get out fast, attack the course, and take the fight to St. Paul’s right from the start. The team took that challenge to heart and met it beyond anything we could have expected. 35 of 36 runners posted their fastest times of the season, 21 of them by more than a minute. Less experienced runners can see improvements come in big chunks like that at this point in the season, but what’s remarkable is that our scoring runners (top 14) improved by an an average of 46 seconds. The team as a whole improved its average 5K time by 1:04. The team has approached its training with focus, determination, and a tremendously positive attitude, and we are so proud of the way the girls are working together, supporting each other, and making each other faster. We look forward to great races with St. Mark’s and Middlesex this week.”—Coach O’Donnell

Will is a leader in every sense. Not only is he co-captain of the Boys Cross-Country team, and our fastest runner, but also a great sportsman. He redirected the lead runners from St. Paul’s when they took a wrong turn at the bottom of boathouse hill during our race last Saturday, a move that was much appreciated by the St. Paul’s team and a great expression of integrity.”—Coach Capen

Margaret brings consistent energy everyday and is one of the hardest workers we have on the team. In our game against Rivers, where we spent the majority of the time on defensive end of the field, Margaret fought hard to move it up the field, as well as to help the entire defensive unit to hold a strong Rivers team to 3 goals. Margaret gives her best effort everyday and we are lucky to have her on the team.” – Coach LeRoy, Meyer, and Giles
