Athletes of the Week October 3 2015

Congratulations to John Beatty, Lars Caspersen, Gus Vrattos, Abby Kirk and Abby Aitkin on being the Athletes of the Week!

“In our opener against Rivers, a 45-10 win, John rushed for 211 yards on 20 carrries (10.55 yard ave.), scored three TD’s, kicked 3 extra points (21 total scoring points), caught one pass, and made 5 tackles on defense while shutting down Rivers’s best player with exceptionally good coverage.  To put it into perspective, 211 yards rushing in a single game is the most in almost 20 years. The last player to rush for over 200 was Noh Joon Choo in 1997, when he rushed for 205, also against Rivers. John is a very special player.” Coach Lyons, Football

“Gus has been a stalwart of the JV soccer defensive shield wall so far this season. When I think of Gus’ play on the pitch, I am reminded of the description of Shield Sheafson from Seamus Heaney’s translation of Beowulf: “There was Shield Sheafson, scourge of many tribes, a wrecker of mead-benches, rampaging among foes.”Gus has a kind, thoughtful soul and on the field he is a Wægmunding warrior.”—Coach Lamarre-Vincent, Boys JV Soccer

“Lars Caspersen raced Governor’s 5K course 1:44 faster this Saturday than he ran St. George’s course the week before and earns Most Improved Runner of the week on the Boys Cross-Country team. He was followed closely by Lwazi Bululu, who raced 1:37 faster this week.”—Coach Capen, Boys Cross Country

“Abby, one of our visitors from Cheltenham College in England, has been a welcome surprise to the JV Field Hockey team this fall. Abby is an extremely hard worker, consistent and reliable, and has helped our defensive line to be as successful as they are. We’re tremendously sad that she will be leaving us in a couple of weeks, but feel very lucky that we’ve had this chance to get to know her.”—Coaches Dennison, Gracey and Posillico

Third Former Abby Kirk stepped up to lead our varsity squad with a smart, tough race against Nobles and Governor's. The field started incredibly fast, but she hung tight with the front pack for the entire race and ultimately finished 3rd overall in a very competitive field.”—Coach O’Donnell
